living — Fall 2013 — Washington, DC

Chevy Chase Residence

The material palette is minimal and took cues from the architecture- granite, bluestone, cedar, and copper used carefully to contain water, lawn, plants, and people.

Moody Graham worked with the client and architect to envision how a small urban garden could be private yet welcoming, comfortable for a large party or just two people on a swing, sustainable without being didactic, integral to the architecture yet not subservient, and beautiful all the time.

Simple but strong landscape architecture is balanced with complex layers of plants that provide walls, ceilings, screens, ornament, and food. Water is captured and celebrated. Terraces are landings, stages, and eddies.
