Jay has known since ninth grade that he wanted to be an architect.

After earning his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Virginia School of Architecture, he began his career in a traditional architectural office, until a chance proximity to a landscape architect shifted his perspective. Watching from across the studio, he realized, “He’s having all the fun. How can I have that experience?”

Jay returned to UVA to study landscape architecture under Harry Porter, the department’s founding chair, and began to see the field as a way to integrate built form with the dynamics of nature. Upon graduation, he joined the university’s planning office and then gained experience at three firms over the next twelve years.

Eventually, Jay opened his practice, which quickly gained recognition by winning a series of design competitions. His architectural training has continued to inform a collaborative design approach that bridges the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture.
