"Outdoor spaces are important because they allow us to reconnect with natural materials, rhythms, smells, sounds, and textures. Peer reviewed scientific data over 30 years tells us what we already know- we are at home in nature rich environments. Views to nature, time in gardens, and exposure to the non rhythmic movement of water, clouds, leaves and grasses decreases stress, improves cognitive ability, restores attention, and makes us generally healthier and happier humans."
The project is a new build home in Arlington, VA. The central courtyard is defined by a cedar slat fence, a poured concrete wall, and the building architecture. A monolithic granite fountain with a stainless steel rill provides a focal point for the space and delineates the dining and living areas.

Birch trees planted on either side of the fence screen the street and weave in and out of the architecture. A specimen Japanese maple (now complete with robin's nest) provides an understory layer. Deciduous and evergreen shrubs and perennials soften the architectural edges and provide changing color and texture. Large concrete pavers complement the scale of the home and create a flexible patio space that transitions into a lawn play area.
