The Nothing New Garden

Join Us in Creating a Sustainable Design Collaboration!

We seek a visionary client to join us in creating the Nothing New Garden—an innovative townhouse garden in Washington, DC, designed and built entirely from reclaimed materials.

This unique project is a collaboration between Moody Graham (Landscape Architect), Oldetowne Landscape Architecture (Landscape General Contractor), and Clients (to be selected). The goal is to minimize the use of newly manufactured materials while maintaining the highest level of design excellence.

We are excited to build the Nothing New Garden to set a precedent for creating a beautiful garden that minimizes the consumption of new materials. By recycling materials, amending existing soils, and protecting or transplanting existing plants, we will minimize waste, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and reduce construction costs. We believe that the Nothing New Garden will be an aesthetically unique creation that celebrates the patina of time.

We will recycle, repair, and repurpose materials on your project site (condition dependent). We also have access to a stockpile of reclaimed materials from recent projects and are in touch with suppliers and manufacturers for additional salvage and reclaimed materials.

Where will the Nothing New garden be built?  - Washington, DC

For the first Nothing New garden, we are focused on a townhouse in Washington, DC. The project team has extensive experience with this scale of project, which will allow us to design and build it relatively quickly and share the completed work as a precedent for future projects.

Who is the Team? - Maybe you!
  • Landscape Architect: Moody Graham
  • General Landscape Contractor: Oldetowne Landscape Architecture
  • Client: Join us

If you are a single-family homeowner with a townhouse garden that could benefit from expert design and installation, and you’re excited about collaborating on a pioneering sustainable project, we’d love to hear from you.

The project may involve fixing drainage problems, installing hardscapes, adding native plants, managing stormwater, repairing or replacing fences, and creating engaging spaces to maximize the function and beauty of a small urban garden. See below for more details on how to apply!

When will the Nothing New Garden be built?- Soon! *

By April 4th, 2025 (Spring Solstice): Deadline for Clients to submit projects for consideration

  • April, 2025: Submission review, conversations with potential clients, project selection, and contract signing
  • May-June, 2025: Site analysis and schematic design
  • July-September, 2025: Construction documents and permitting (as needed)
  • October, 2025: Construction beigins

* This is a preliminary schedule and is subject to revision as we finalize project selection, refine the design vision with clients, develop drawings, and obtain necessary permits. The construction timeline will vary based on project scope, complexity, and programming.

How much does the project cost?

Based on our experience building similar scale projects, we recommend that clients invest 10% of their home's value in the total site work. Unfortunately, we can’t provide an accurate project cost until we have a design.

  • Our team's reclaimed material will be provided to the client at no cost.
  • The garden design work, permitting, and construction administration will be billed separately.
  • Oldetowne, the landscape contractor, will install the project and provide construction labor at a fixed price. This labor may include (but is not limited to) demolition, grading, new drainage/water collection, masonry (walls, paving, paths, etc.), carpentry (fences, pergolas, decks, etc.), metalwork, landscape lighting, irrigation, and planting.

How to apply?

It is easy!  If you are interested in being the first Nothing New Garden client, please submit the following to nothingnew@moodyarchitecture.com

  • Constraints and Opportunities ( are there any unique conditions within your project that you would like to highlight?)
  • 3-5 recent photographs of the site
